Justin Verlander's velocity may be down a bit this season, but his effectiveness isn't.
The Detroit Tigers' ace is 4-2 and flirted with yet another no-hitter Sunday during his team's 9-0 win over the Houston Astros at Minutemaid Park in Houston.
Verlander nearly achieved his third no-hitter of his career as the Tigers went on to sweep the four-game series with the Astros, new members of the American League West.
The 2011 American League MVP and Cy Young winner went seven innings Sunday, giving up just a pair of hits in his seventh appearance of 2013.
The Tigers are 19-11 and in first place in the AL Central.
