Jose Valverde was once one of the most celebrated Detroit Tigers.

As a prime-time closer, "Papa Grande" wowed fans and embarrassed hitters with his emotional style. But after a rocky stint with the Tigers this season, the Big Potato was served his walking papers.

Matthew Mowery of the Oakland Press explores Detroit's options at closer with a recent piece. The Tigers beat writer does a great job of outlining the mess in MoTown, but also suggests that the "grass isn't always greener in your neighbor's yard."

Detroit has to solidify the closer spot if it's going to live up to the World Series-or-bust standards set by fans and management. As of now, Joaquin Benoit looks like he's the one that the Tigers will rely upon in crunch time.

Give Mowery's piece a read. It's well worth the time.
